Is Your Garage Door Ready for Holiday Guests and Deliveries?

Holiday Guests and Deliveries: Is Your Garage Door Up to It?

Every time you open the garage door does it make a grinding sound? You may be concerned about it giving out in the middle of a house full of family. Or perhaps you have given some thought to what you will do if it should jam with a porch full of packages.

There is more traffic in and out of your garage over the holidays and that kind of use has a way of bringing to light any problems you have put off for the rest of the year. We at Top Notch Garage Door have seen our share of them. Since 2009 we have been putting the doors of homeowners in Atlanta and North Georgia back in order. Before the season gets away from you, call (404) 390-2669 and let us take a professional look at yours.

What the Holidays Do to a Garage Door

For the most part one is not aware of how many times the door cycles in an ordinary day. Put in the comings and goings of guests, a trip for the big dinner groceries and a driver leaving gifts on the step and you are looking at dozens of cycles rather than a few.

All those moving parts, from the springs and cables to the rollers and tracks, are under stress and will show their age with each opening and closing. Then you have the cold of a Georgia morning to contend with; the low temperatures can put a strain on components and small things become breakdowns.

Some Warning Signs

A garage door will normally give you some indication of trouble well in advance of a complete failure, you just have to know what to look or listen for.

We would put these on the list of reasons to have your door seen to before the holidays:

  • Any popping, squealing or grinding when in use
  • A hesitation in the door or it not moving as fast as of old
  • Fraying or gaps in the lift cables
  • A spring with a gap in the coil or one that is loose and stretched
  • Tracks out of alignment, bent or loose
  • The opener ignoring the remote or reversing without cause
  • An uneven or crooked door as it goes up

If you see them, have them checked. Dealing with a minor repair is preferable to a breakdown when your relatives are in town.

When the Door Will Not Close and Deliveries Keep Coming

With all the holiday shopping there is a constant flow of deliveries; the garage is often used as a drop zone or the easy way in with boxes in hand. If the door is not going to seal at the bottom or it sticks halfway, your home is left open to the elements, pests and passers by.

Then there is the matter of a stuck door. A heavy door made immovable by a broken spring or cable can be a nuisance when you are supposed to be making an airport run.

The good news is a pre-holiday tune-up will head off most of this. We will check the balance and the safety sensors, inspect the hardware and so on. Should something go awry in the course of your celebration we are here for it, being open around the clock for emergency service.
